Emigrant Policy Regimes (EMIGPOL)
EMIGPOL examines the policies of 21 countries* among the top 25 countries with the highest number of emigrants, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) Population Statistics. The project explores the interaction between policies controlling emigration (exit policies), facilitating or hindering the return of citizens (return policies), and managing the relationship between the home state and its citizens abroad (emigrant/diaspora policies). Additionally, the project investigates the interplay between these policies and the bilateral agreements signed by home and host states. By focusing on countries with the largest emigrant populations from both the Global North and the Global South and embracing a comparative perspective, EMIGPOL also aims to address the imbalances in migration studies.
Launched in 2022, the EMIGPOL Project is supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBÄ°TAK) under the 3501 Career Development Program with the project number 121K970, as well as by the BahçeÅŸehir University Student Assistantship Program, the TÜBÄ°TAK 2247-C Intern Researcher Scholarship Program (STAR), and the TÜBÄ°TAK BÄ°ÇABA-Working Together, Succeeding Together Scholarship Program. We extend our gratitude to TÜBÄ°TAK and the BahçeÅŸehir University Student Assistantship Program for supporting this project.
